This morning the milk carton was nearly empty, so I told Annika she could only have a little bit in her cup. "Mommy, you can get more milk from the store and put it in the cup and then I can have lotsa milk." In the next moment I explained how Mommy and Daddy weren't feeling very well and so she would need to be on her best behavior today. This was followed by, "But its okay, Mommy. I got a doctor kit and we can fix everybody and not be sick." Later she wrapped the blood pressure cuff around my wrist and thus determined that I had a fever.

My older daughter sees it in terms of colors and asthetic. Does this match that, and this is soooo pretty. Short sleeves. Short socks. You look so pretty with you sweater and you shirt, Mommy. She dresses paper dolls to the hilt, always carefully matching their tops, bottoms, purses, and shoes.
My younger daughter sees things in terms of component parts. What can I disassemble and how does this fit inside there? Maybe she'll get to the matching stage too, but early indications are pointing to a career in engineering. Take the classic glow worm for example. Annika slept with it many a night. Period. End of story. Keira has slept with it many a night too. And it hasn't survived a single one in Keira's clutches without being opened up for surgery. She takes the music box out of its gut every single night. If you show her something with a door, she'll open it. If you hand her a doll, she'll check under the dress to see if there's something that comes apart. Hand her a pen? Who cares about writing. There's a cool lid that comes on and off. And on and off. And ... well, you get the idea. Kids are fascinating.

Annika told her sister this morning, very seriously, "You look pretty with you ponytail and Grammy's dress. You look so pretty, yeah." And she nodded her head so Keira would be convinced. She was also very graceful with her envy, and said only, "When I get more hair, I can wear a ponytail too." She wants to wear hair things so badly but headbands are the only thing that stay in.
